How much should we spend on marketing?
How much should you spend?
There are a variety of opinions to this question, most are rather vague. At the end of the day, it will require you to figure out what is best for you.
For the typical small business owner looking to succeed and expand, the U.S. Small Business Administration (www.sba.gov) recommends investing at least 3-5% of your annual gross revenue into advertising. The quick equation for determining your budget is to take last year’s gross revenue and multiply it by .05 – this is your annual budget baseline. If you want your business to grow at a faster pace, you should consider spending more than the 5% budget.
Why advertise?
Even when times are tough and money is tight, the key is to invest in your success. Consistent advertising gives you an advantage over competitors who reduce or eliminate their advertising. Consider the number of sales that may be lost simply because the consumer/customer did not have enough knowledge about the options available to them. The goal is to drive traffic to your store and website or request your service.
A number of Revolution Wraps’ customers have commented on the immediate impact a vehicle wrap has had on their sales. Their service/delivery vehicle drivers noticed they were returning to a neighborhood just days after being there. The customer had seen one of their vehicles and called for service. A vehicle wrap is essentially a moving billboard that is always working for you, placing your message directly in front of potential customers.
Name-brands have been utilizing vehicle graphics as part of their marketing mix for years.
They get it. It works.
Bottom line, most successful businesses utilize consistent and aggressive advertising. Even the big name companies may have started out small, with a limited marketing budget, however, they understood the importance of effective advertising. Over time, with a little luck and a consistent plan, those small companies gained momentum and continue to advertise to maintain their position and continue their growth.
